Confucius is traditionally dated to 551–479 BCE; accounts of his thought require attention to their sources.
Historical and textual context#
The Stanford entry explains that early texts offer differing representations of Confucius. It examines ritual, personal virtues, family and political order rather than treating every later story as a verified biography.
Reading exercise#
Choose a passage from an identified edition of the Analects. Record its passage number and translator, then distinguish the text’s wording from a modern interpretation. Do not present a social-media quotation as his words without locating its source.
Scope#
These reading questions are editorial suggestions. This introduction does not reproduce a classical passage or claim to settle disputed authorship and interpretation.
