Western Jin and Eastern Jin are distinct periods; neither should be confused with the later Jurchen Jin.

Chronological context#

The Met’s timeline gives Western Jin as 265–316 CE and Eastern Jin in southern China as 317–420 CE.

A reading exercise#

Record the Chinese dynasty name, location and date when reading a label. The romanization “Jin” alone is insufficient to identify the period. Compare the timeline with the actual object’s attribution.

Using the dates#

The exercise is editorial guidance for evaluating evidence. Retain the named reference and its dating convention when comparing another account; this short introduction is not an exhaustive political history.
