Kashgar’s old city includes historic urban fabric and substantial modern rebuilding.

Documented place and context#

A May 2025 report published by the Kashgar administration describes the housing-renovation programme begun in 2009 and subsequent work in the core and surrounding areas. This is not evidence that every visible house is untouched ancient construction. The report also describes staged visitor performances, which should be distinguished from residents’ everyday lives.

Planning your visit#

Choose a named street or public destination rather than assuming any doorway is open to visitors. Ask before photographing a person or entering a residential space. Check the actual date and venue for a performance. Do not present an organized tourism activity as a practice shared by all Uyghur people.

Scope#

This focused introduction is not a full city itinerary or a personal visit report. Planning questions are editorial suggestions. Current prices, transport, entry requirements and operating arrangements require confirmation with the institution or provider.
