Liuhou Shrine in Liuzhou commemorates the Tang writer and official Liu Zongyuan.

Documented place and context#

Liuzhou Museum dates the shrine’s foundation to 822, three years after Liu Zongyuan’s death. Its account identifies stone inscriptions and an associated cenotaph. A cenotaph is a commemorative monument, not a claim that the person’s remains are buried there. The foundation date does not date every present structure.

Planning your visit#

Keep 柳侯祠 distinct from the museum’s main building when selecting an entrance. For an inscription, read the label for the author, calligrapher and date of carving; those roles need not belong to one person or period. Check the institution’s current notice for gallery access. A historical account does not confirm that a special exhibition remains on display.
