The Silk Roads were networks of land and maritime exchange, rather than one road opened in a single ceremony.

What the reference documents#

UNESCO describes connected routes carrying goods, knowledge, beliefs and cultural practices. It also notes that the name Silk Road is much later than the networks themselves.

Reading exercise#

When reading about an envoy or trade journey, identify the actual route, date and source. Do not infer that one mission created every connection or that a modern mapped line was a continuously paved ancient highway.

Scope#

The exercise is editorial guidance. This introduction distinguishes a documented object or network from later stories and does not invent an eyewitness account.

Source#

Museum or heritage reference.
