The Met’s timeline dates the Tang dynasty to 618–907 CE.

Chronological context#

The timeline places Tang after Sui. This broad range is a framework: a seventh-century object and a ninth-century object still need their own dates and contexts.

A reading exercise#

Select a catalogued object and record its material, function, date and attributed location. Compare evidence rather than assuming that an entire dynasty shared one costume, artistic style or way of life.

Using the dates#

The exercise is editorial guidance for evaluating evidence. Retain the named reference and its dating convention when comparing another account; this short introduction is not an exhaustive political history.
