Use specific ingredient questions when planning vegetarian meals in Guangdong; a regional cuisine name does not verify a particular dish.
Place name and menu vocabulary#
| Chinese | Pinyin | Selected meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 广东省 | Guǎng dōng shěng | Guangdong Province |
| 素食 | sù shí | vegetarian food |
| 菜心 | cài xīn | choy sum |
| 点心 | diǎn xin | light refreshments; dim sum |
Questions to use before ordering#
For dim sum, check each item rather than treating an assorted basket as one recipe. For greens, ask about the sauce added after cooking. “Cantonese” does not establish a dish’s exact ingredients.
Scope of this guide#
This is an editorial meal-planning exercise, not a survey of regional restaurants or a historical catalogue of local dishes. The words are examples for reading a menu, not evidence that every listed food originated in this region. Ask the actual kitchen to confirm ingredients and preparation; this page does not certify a restaurant or a product.
