The Mountain Resort at Chengde is a Qing imperial complex in Hebei. Its World Heritage designation includes outlying temples as well as the resort itself.

When was it built?#

UNESCO's English description dates construction to 1703–1792. These dates place the complex in the Qing dynasty; it should not be presented as a Ming palace.

What is included?#

Palaces and buildings used for administration and ceremonies stand within a landscape that also includes gardens, lakes, pasture and forest. The surrounding temples use varied architectural styles. A description limited to one palace misses the wider ensemble.

How can I read the site?#

Compare the functions of the buildings with their setting in the landscape. The official property title is also useful when checking whether a description refers to the resort, a particular temple or the complete heritage ensemble.
