Kaifeng’s Iron Pagoda dates to 1049 and takes its name from its iron-coloured glazed exterior.

Documented place and context#

Shunhe Hui District’s introduction identifies the Youguo Temple pagoda as an octagonal, thirteen-storey glazed tower. “Iron Pagoda” is its familiar name, not a description of an iron structural material. The account distinguishes the historic tower from Iron Pagoda Park, established in 1955.

Planning your visit#

Save 开封铁塔 and distinguish the tower from the surrounding park when checking access. A building’s number of storeys does not establish that visitors may climb them. Confirm present entry and conservation restrictions with the site. Do not treat the park’s founding date as the tower’s construction date.
