Ask your host about the tea and the serving arrangement rather than assuming one ritual applies everywhere.
A documented social setting#
UNESCO’s tea-heritage account includes serving and sharing tea in homes, workplaces, tea houses, restaurants and temples. It describes transmission through families and apprenticeships.
Practical suggestions#
- Ask what is being served and how your host would like you to take part.
- Say if you prefer water, a smaller serving or no more tea.
- Before handling a vessel, check whether it is hot and whether the host wants to pour.
- Ask before photographing a person or a private gathering.
These are suggestions for considerate interaction, not claims about a rule followed by all Chinese people. A demonstration may follow a particular school or host’s preferences.
