The Met dates the Yuan dynasty to 1271–1368 CE.

Chronological context#

The timeline shows Yuan alongside the ending Southern Song period before Ming begins in 1368. A dynasty’s founding date and the completion of conquest need not be the same event.

A reading exercise#

When comparing dates in different references, ask what each date marks. State the convention rather than silently merging proclamation, conquest and later political transitions.

Using the dates#

The exercise is editorial guidance for evaluating evidence. Retain the named reference and its dating convention when comparing another account; this short introduction is not an exhaustive political history.
