The Met’s chronology distinguishes Western Zhou, 1046–771 BCE, from Eastern Zhou, 770–256 BCE.

Chronological context#

The chronology also separates the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. These period names should not be flattened into a single unchanged political setting.

A reading exercise#

When reading about an object, identify which Zhou period the label means. Compare its stated date and location before using it as evidence for an entire dynasty.

Using the dates#

The exercise is editorial guidance for evaluating evidence. Retain the named reference and its dating convention when comparing another account; this short introduction is not an exhaustive political history.
