Su Liupeng’s 1853 painting of visits to Zhuge Liang’s hut is a later artistic representation of an earlier narrative.

What the reference documents#

The Met identifies the handscroll’s artist and date and explains the depicted meeting with Liu Bei. The nineteenth-century object is evidence of later representation, not a contemporary portrait of the third-century event.

Reading exercise#

Separate the date of the painting from the period represented. Ask which textual tradition informs the scene before treating its details as biography. A dramatic depiction does not establish an invented conversation, weather prediction or military performance statistic.

Scope#

The exercise is editorial guidance. This introduction distinguishes a documented object or network from later stories and does not invent an eyewitness account.
