The 2021 Chinese-language review listed YYDS, 破防 and 躺平 among its ten internet expressions.

What a dated list tells you#

The Commercial Press’s account of the 2021 review identifies these expressions in that year’s selection. Inclusion establishes a dated editorial selection. It does not show which expression is most common in 2026 or how often a particular age group uses it.

Read the surrounding sentence#

For an unfamiliar abbreviation, first check whether the post explains it. Keep Chinese characters, romanization and English interpretation in separate fields. An acronym may be praise, imitation or sarcasm depending on the surrounding exchange; do not infer the author’s attitude from the letters alone.

Build a useful learning note#

Record the expression, a link to its real context, the posting date and your provisional interpretation. If you write your own example, label it as a practice sentence. Avoid claiming an origin story unless the original record can be located. A dated language list is a starting point for learning, not proof that every young Chinese speaker uses each item.
