China’s intangible-heritage record identifies Chizhou Nuo as a tradition associated with places including Guichi, Shitai and Qingyang.

What the reference establishes#

The project record locates this particular tradition in the Chizhou region of Anhui. It treats performance and ritual within a local cultural context. The broad word Nuo should not be used to imply that every masked performance in rural China has one origin, one ritual purpose or an identical present-day practice.

Questions for reading or visiting#

Identify the specific community and project name before describing a performance. Ask whether a visitor event is a staged presentation, a public festival or a ceremony with restricted participation. Seek permission before recording performers or ritual objects. The heritage listing alone does not establish a current schedule or permission to handle masks.
