Confucius is traditionally dated to 551–479 BCE, but early sources represent him in different ways.

What the source establishes#

The Stanford entry examines ritual, virtue, family and political order while explaining that later interpreters selected and combined different early representations. An account in the Analects is therefore not interchangeable with a modern biography or a claim about the behaviour of every Chinese household.

A reading exercise#

Choose a passage and write down its section number, translator and edition. Separate the translation from the editor’s commentary. If a quotation circulates without a passage reference, locate it before attributing it to Confucius. Compare how two translations handle a key term rather than assuming one English word exhausts its meaning.

Scope and reference#

The exercise is editorial guidance, not an interview, personal field report or claim of scientific validation.
