Su Liupeng painted a handscroll depicting visits to Zhuge Liang’s hut in 1853.
What the source establishes#
The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies the artist, date and subject. Its interpretation describes Liu Bei’s repeated attempts to meet Zhuge Liang. The painting is a nineteenth-century representation of an earlier narrative; details shown in it should not be treated as a contemporary record of a third-century meeting.
A reading exercise#
Separate the date of an artwork from the date of the event it represents. Ask which textual tradition supplied the scene. When reading a battle story, identify whether the evidence is an early historical text, a later novel or a modern dramatization. None can be substituted for the others without explanation.
Scope and reference#
The exercise is editorial guidance, not an interview, personal field report or claim of scientific validation.
