Laozi can refer to a figure of Daoist tradition and to the text also called the Daodejing.

What the source establishes#

The Stanford entry discusses uncertainty about the historical figure and the text’s authorship. It treats dao, de, ziran and wuwei as concepts with competing interpretations. Translating wuwei as “doing nothing” without explanation can conceal questions about action, ethics and political life that different readers understand differently.

A reading exercise#

First identify whether an assertion concerns a person, a textual passage or a later religious tradition. Compare named translations of the same passage. A story about a border guard or an archive keeper should retain its status as a traditional account, rather than becoming an independently verified episode with an exact date.

Scope and reference#

The exercise is editorial guidance, not an interview, personal field report or claim of scientific validation.
