The British Library’s publication listing identifies The Art of War with Sun Tzu and military strategy.
Evidence and its limits#
A publication listing identifies a book and attribution. It does not prove that the text is unrelated to warfare, that everyone misreads it, or that a quotation has the same wording in every translation.
Questions for critical reading#
Choose a named edition and record its translator, chapter and passage when quoting. Distinguish the ancient text, a later commentary and a modern business application. If a phrase is shared without a reference, locate it before putting it in quotation marks. State an interpretation as an interpretation, rather than a fact about what the author was exclusively interested in.
